The Retail SDK Handbook — A Hidden Gem in the AX7 RTW VM

2 February 20181 min readHitesh Manglani

As of 7.3, this handbook has been superseded by the official docs: Retail developer documentation home page. This post is a republish of an earlier article based on 7.1, for anyone still on that version.

While browsing the Retail SDK folder on an LCS-deployed AX7 RTW VM, I came across a document called the AX7 Retail Handbook — easy to miss, but genuinely useful.

It's split into two parts:

  1. Retail SDK mechanics — build steps, configuration for productivity, and a recommended branching strategy for working effectively in teams.
  2. Extensibility reference — the main extension points available in the Retail SDK, useful as a starting reference for anyone writing SDK-based code.

Sample extensions ship in the same folder, alongside the handbook. Credit to the Microsoft team for going the extra mile on documentation here.

If you have access to an LCS-deployed VM, look for these materials there directly.

Update: these documents were also covered in the Retail customizations: Part 1 session from the Dynamics Technical Conference, available via the Customer Source learning portal.
